Approx. 45 minutes inland from Casa Anhelando Andalucia.
The village is located at an altitude of 645 m, at the foot of Mount La Maroma. The village with 2,300 inhabitants is part of the Mudéjar route.
The spectacular El Saltillo walking route starts from the village, a counterpart to La Garganta del Chorro/Caminito del Rey.
It is a beautiful 8 km long walk (approx. 3 hours there and back) through a gorge and takes you past a (modern) aqueduct, water reservoir, fountains, and over sandy and metal walkways attached to the steep rocks to small waterfalls known as El Saltillo. Along the way you have a beautiful view of the La Mamma. In contrast to La Garganta, it is (still) quiet (unpaid) walking here. The question is for how long, because in mid-2020 a spectacular 54 m long suspension bridge was constructed, at a height of 5 m. The route is then part of the 7th stage of the Gran Senda de Málaga, and connects Canillas with Cómpeta. Since the suspension bridge has been built, which is safe in itself, you can extend the walk by walking to the next village of Sedella, but this is a more challenging part. You walk here in a Parque Natural and sometimes see eagles swooping over the rocky peaks and, with a bit of luck, ibexes clambering.
