Málaga is a municipality and the second largest city in Andalusia, and the sixth largest city in Spain. It is the capital of the province of Málaga of the same name. In 2007 the city had an official population of 561,250. A total of 1,074,057 people lived in the urban area of Málaga during that period. The city is located on the Mediterranean Sea, on the Costa del Sol, approximately 140 kilometers from the Strait of Gibraltar. Málaga is surrounded by mountains, the so-called Hills of Axarquía and is crossed by two rivers, the Guadalmedina and the Guadalhorce, both of which flow into the Mediterranean Sea.
